The enchantment of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's version of "The
Nutcracker" was nearly complete Saturday afternoon when the lavish
2002 production was performed for a large audience of adults and
children at the Benedum Center, Downtown.
"The Nutcracker" is the story of a girl's Christmas Day fantasy
that was created in Germany, revised in France and turned into a
ballet in Russia. But the ballet was virtually forgotten for a half-
century after its 1892 premiere and owes its holidays' ubiquity to
revivals by American dance companies.
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's production is set in Pittsburgh and
begins on a street in Shadyside outside a mansion. It features many
