Article: Ellsworth restricts methadone clinics

ELLSWORTH - City councilors on Monday approved an amendment to the land use ordinance that places restrictions on methadone clinics, which could stonewall any provider from coming to Ellsworth, according to one local doctor.

By a vote of 6-1, Ellsworth councilors supported the amendment, which stipulates that a clinic must operate as part of a hospital campus and must be restricted to a maximum of 30 patients.

The amendment also allows only one methadone clinic per hospital (Ellsworth has only one) and requires that any clinic, no matter the size, be approved by the local planning board.
