Buying shrubs and trees at this time of the year is the
equivalent of buying stocks when their price hits rock bottom yet is
certain to rebound. But some of us gardeners need a jolt to remember
that fall is both the best time to buy and the right time to plant.
On a recent fall morning, my car started emitting strange
noises, and I pulled into the first gas station I saw. As a mechanic
poked under the hood, I ventured into the adjacent shopping center
and stumbled across a nursery with an outdoor area that seemed like
an abandoned battlefield.
