Center Artis Gilmore, 38, has been waived by the Chicago Bulls.

"Artis is debating retirement and has asked us to waive him, thus keeping his options open for a possible return to the NBA at a later date if he should decide not to retire," said Jerry Krause, the team's vice president for operations. If he retired without waivers, Gilmore would be ineligible to return to the NBA for one year.

Gilmore played 24 games this season, averaging four points and two rebounds a game. He lost his starting job to Dave Corzine this week . . .

Utah Jazz Coach Frank Layden banished reserve center Mel Turpin to the locker room for much of the second half of the Jazz's 101-93
