Ovid McMaster "Mack" Butler, 92, a former Navy captain who later
became a high school teacher, died Aug. 13 of cardiac arrest at the
Gardens at Fair Oaks, an assisted living facility in Fairfax.
Capt. Butler was born in Ogden, Utah, and grew up in Washington.
After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, he served on the
aircraft carrier USS Lexington in 1937 and participated in the
search for missing aviator Amelia Earhart in the Pacific.
Early in World War II, he and his crew aboard the submarine USS S-
27 were stranded for a week in a deserted fishing village in the
Aleutian Islands after their vessel ran aground. Later in the war,
