When John Ernst planned his wedding and honeymoon for the end of March during his spring break from the University of Missouri- Columbia, he wasn't too concerned that the whole affair could be cut short because of a prize-winning music composition. Ernst, who studies music at MU, had submitted his original piece called "The City Awakens" to a national contest held by the Music Teachers National Association.

In November, Ernst learned that his composition had won at the state level. By January, his piece came out on top of the region. And that's when he got concerned about his wedding plans; winning at the national level would mean a trip to Austin, Texas, to receive his $3,000 prize and ...
