The Breakfast of Champions cereal was created by a mishap in Minneapolis.A health clinician was making some wheat bran gruel for patients when some spilled onto the stove and immediately sizzled and baked into a crisp flake. This delicious accident in 1921 was the start of something very good. A sample was shared with Washburn Crosby Co., the predecessor of General Mills. Thirty-six varieities of wheat were tested to find a flake that wouldn't turn to dust when packaged in the box.
