The Breakfast of Champions cereal was created by a mishap in
Minneapolis.A health clinician was making some wheat bran gruel for
patients when some spilled onto the stove and immediately sizzled and
baked into a crisp flake. This delicious accident in 1921 was the
start of something very good. A sample was shared with Washburn
Crosby Co., the predecessor of General Mills. Thirty-six varieities
of wheat were tested to find a flake that wouldn't turn to dust when
packaged in the box.
The name of that cereal was Washburn's Gold Medal Whole Wheat
Flakes. George Cornack was the researcher on the project, and his
wife suggested shortening the name to Wheaties. The ad slogan for
