After President George W. Bush announced the United States would
not be part of the 163-nation agreement to cut greenhouse gas
emissions, mayors from cities across the country joined together to
endorse the Kyoto Protocol.
More than five years later, more than 260 cities U.S. cities have
ratified a measure that backs the goals of the 1997 treaty. Next
week, Columbia will decide whether to join them.
Members of the Columbia City Council on Monday will consider
whether to sign the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, a non-
binding resolution that promises efforts on a municipal level to cut
emissions, conserve energy and use renewable energy.
