I suppose an e-mail I received this week "inspired" today's column. Many communications are similar in nature, but then there are calls, each with its own uniqueness.

The person contacting me wanted to trade a guinea pig, cage and all the fixings for one of our dogs. This brought to mind that perhaps an explanation of exactly what rescue organizations and humane societies do might be in order.

Though the rescues in Columbia operate somewhat differently, each is administered by caring and compassionate people with a conviction to their beliefs. Exactly what does a private, no-kill animal shelter do? And who does it?
