Birthday traditions die hard in our household. Every year my kids
look forward to bringing their favorite snack to school on their
birthdays to share with their classmates, who always seem to voice
their own special requests. My son August's friends ask him to bring
his mom's chocolate-covered strawberries. Actually - they're seventh-
grade boys - they don't ask, they insist - probably with an added
shove for emphasis. Lark's classmates request her mom's meringue
cookies. They're sixth-grade girls. They have their own methods of
persuasion.
But this year we have a new recipe - for chocolate mint cookies -
so favored by our family that those tired meringue cookies and
strawberries are all ...
