The plan was for Nate Herndon to pitch the first three innings of
yesterday's baseball game against Kirksville, and that plan was
quickly going out the window on another chilly evening at Rock Bridge
Field.
Three walks and two wild pitches by the Rock Bridge left-hander
led to a run in the first for Kirksville. An inning-opening walk in
the second had the junior on the ropes again. After a second visit to
the mound by Bruins pitching coach Ron Widbin, it was clear that if
Herndon didn't throw a strike soon, his day would be done.
So Herndon laid a pitch over the plate to Travis Eagen, who sliced
a screaming line drive down the first-base line that 6-foot-6 Bruins
first baseman Erik Darkow ...
