The blossoms on the rose of Sharon bush are slowly fading, just as
surely as summer is on the wane. Fall flowers appear on the landscape
and the first sprays of goldenrod are in bloom. Joe-pye weed has been
blooming for weeks now, and purple ironweed raises its tall head in
meadows and fields.
Along the ditch line, the Asiatic day flower shows its tiny, deep
blue flowers, contrasting with the wild white morning glories that
grow in profusion there. We always called this modest little blue
flower "wandering Jew," and it does wander along on reclining stems
with flowers that bloom only for one day.
