WASHINGTON - The unpredictable Zacarias Moussaoui legal drama
lurched in a new direction Thursday when the accused terrorist
retracted his guilty plea to charges he conspired with the Sept. 11
hijackers.
The avowed al-Qaida member indicated last week that he intended to
plead guilty, and he reiterated that desire at the start of
Thursday's tumultuous 2 1/2-hour hearing. But he balked after US
District Judge Leonie Brinkema explained that he could not admit only
to selected facts and would have to acknowledge participation in the
conspiracy to hijack planes and slam them into the World Trade Center
