Article: SUVs: Mileage standards pitiful

THE BUSH administration's recent increase in gas mileage standards for SUVs and other light trucks is a transparent sham.

The increase, a pitiful mile and a half per gallon over a three- year period, is less than the auto industry already has committed itself to achieving.

As modest as this increase is, it's the first raise in mileage standards since the 1980s. An attempt in Congress last year to significantly raise the standards over the next 13 years failed, victim to the usual silly arguments that opponents always have raised.
