Eugene T. Lauer, the Charles County administrator who retired
last October amid an ethics investigation that roiled county
government, has been advising and financially supporting
Commissioner Al Smith (R-Waldorf) in his campaign to unseat
Commissioners President Wayne Cooper (D-At Large).
For a decade, Lauer was the county's highest-ranking staff
officer. And for the past several months, he has been at Smith's
side: Lauer wore a replica of Smith's signature cowboy hat at the
commissioner's Port Tobacco fundraiser in August, and he wore a
Smith campaign T-shirt while serving beer to guests at Smith's event
at Hot Licks guitar shop in Waldorf this month.
