BELFAST, Northern Ireland - The two-day summit between President
Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair looks certain to conclude
with a U.S. endorsement of new peacemaking proposals for Northern
Ireland.
Blair, a stalwart ally in the war with Iraq, hopes Bush's backing
will strengthen his hand when he publishes his government's new
Northern Ireland plan by Thursday - the fifth anniversary of the Good
Friday accord. That pact sought to end three decades of sectarian
conflict.
This will be the first occasion when Bush has become directly
involved in negotiations. A senior White House official said Bush's
presence in Northern Ireland was meant to signal his backing for
Blair's blueprint.
