Kanawha Hotel timeline Dec. 24, 1902 - Hotel company gets charter
from Secretary of State William O. Dawson. Hotel opens in 1903.
Aug. 1, 1923 - The hotel's directors, including founding member
F.M. Staunton, sell the hotel to Angus MacDonald, B.W. Peyton,
Prentice Ashton and J.B. Crowley for $525,000.
1929 - Daniel Boone Hotel opens, displacing the Kanawha Hotel as
Charleston's premier hotel.
1960 - U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy uses the hotel as headquarters
for presidential primary campaign in West Virginia. The state's
primary was seen as Kennedy's chance to prove that a Roman Catholic
could be elected president. Kennedy handily defeated Hubert H.
Humphrey on his way to the presidency.
