What an "icky" governor's race it could have been.

We got a sample of the circus atmosphere that would have accompanied the 2004 campaign had Gov. Bob Wise stayed in the race when Wise addressed The Associated Press Legislative Lookahead luncheon last week - with gubernatorial challenger Phillip "Icky" Frye in the audience.

During a 45-minute question-and-answer session, Wise never once acknowledged the presence of his alleged paramour's ex-husband.

Beforehand, however, Wise's handlers were careful to scope out a route that allowed the governor to get into and out of the conference room where the luncheon was held without passing Frye's table.
