PITTSBURGH - Kuhn's Markets had planned a sale on green onions at
five western Pennsylvania stores, but nixed the idea last week when
grocery store managers learned that scallions could be linked to an
outbreak of hepatitis A that has killed three people and sickened
510, including 18 West Virginians.
"We were going to get a big shipment of [green onions
] for the
promo, but we decided it wasn't a good idea. We didn't have to pull
them. We just figured it's best to play it on the safe side," said
Paul Mueller, Kuhn's Markets' risk manager.
The state Department of Health has not traced the source of a
