THE Kanawha Hotel stood throughout the 20th century in downtown
Charleston on the northeast corner of Summers and Virginia streets.
Vacant for several years, it recently succumbed to the wreckers
after attempts to return it to its former grandeur failed.
Now, in its place, a new building has risen, and the old Kanawha
Hotel lives only in pictures, such as this postcard.
Much was written of the old hotel in its last days, so I will not
repeat stories that are well-known. But it is worth reflecting that
in many cities like Charleston when a historic building is lost,
there is often nothing to replace it. Some old downtowns are
