East-West deadlock would end soon.
Winston Churchill talked about his vision of merging the United
States and a united Europe.
And professional baseball returned to Charleston at the new,
$300,000 Watt Powell Park. Every seat was filled, people sat atop the
field's walls and umpires pleaded with fans standing along the
outfield foul lines not to stray into fair territory.
Nearly 55 years later, Watt Powell and its latest tenants, the
Charleston Alley Cats, are set to open what is expected - really,
this time - to be the field's final year of organized baseball on
Thursday against the Delmarva ...
