A fruit held sacred by the world's major faiths and used by people
around the globe for centuries as medicine is gaining new recognition
in modern America thanks to possible health benefits.
The pomegranate, in season from October through December, was one
of the first plants people cultivated thousands of years ago.
Since then, pomegranates have appeared in the texts and religious
practices of Buddhism, Christianity, Greek mythology, Islam and
Judaism.
The pomegranate, whose name comes from the French term for "seedy
apple," is one of three fruits considered sacred in Buddhism. It
often appears as a symbol of resurrection in Middle Age and
Renaissance Christian art.
