Article: Publisher Hindman leaves Daily Mail

A cake greeted Sam Hindman when he came to work Monday morning. It said, simply: "So long, Boss."

Hindman, publisher of the Charleston Daily Mail since 1998, retired Monday, ending a career at the newspaper that dates back to 1970.

"Sam's such a personality," said Daily Mail Editor Nanya Friend, who will take Hindman's title and keep her own. "Sam talks to people in this building, all over this building, and knows everybody. He has that booming voice and calls everybody 'boss.'"

In Monday's Daily Mail, Hindman said he planned to spend more time with his wife, Iris, at their vacation home in St. Petersburg, Fla.
