Article: Kid gloves for Madonna on 'Oprah'; Singer speaks after criticism of Malawi adoption

Just a few hours after the White House press corps grilled George W. Bush on the Iraq war Wednesday, Madonna faced questions on her own foreign enterprise.

But the singer, appearing on Oprah Winfrey's talk show in her first interview since adopting a baby from Malawi, received kinder treatment than the president. Despite criticism from others of Madonna's tactics and presumed motives, the enduring Queen of TV gave the fading Queen of Pop the video equivalent of a warm hug.

"I wanted to open up my home and give a life to a child who didn't have one," Madonna explained to Oprah.

"And I say, God bless you for that," Winfrey responded as her audience applauded heartily.
