Article: Pushing it uphill is ritual befitting a journalist

The alarm goes off at 5:45. We snooze till 6 and then, as my kid gets ready for school, I make us some tea and grab the three plastic buckets that wait in the front hall. I fill each of them with different amounts of dried beet pulp and pelleted horse feed, and then add hot water from the kitchen sink. Shortly after the child leaves to get her ride to school, I slip on my coverall, call the dog and load the heavy buckets into the truck to drive the four miles across the river to the horses.

In summer, we do the feed at the barn, leaving the buckets to soak overnight, but in winter, too often they would freeze, and the horses appreciate a hot meal on a cold morning. So we live in the cold ...
