Mayor Danny Jones and other city officials celebrated the shutoff Wednesday afternoon of the video lottery terminals at the Hot Spot in Kanawha City.

At 4 p.m., computer operators at the state Lottery Commission pulled the plug on the Hot Spot's 10 terminals, apparently ending a two-year legal battle involving the city, its zoning board, the Fraternal Order of the Owls, two Kanawha County circuit judges and the state Supreme Court.

The city won each step of the way, but the fraternal group was able to keep the gambling parlor open through a series of stays granted by circuit judges Tod Kaufman and Irene Berger. Time ran out Friday, when the last 30-day stay from Berger ...
