Andrew Cornelius Thomas, 80, a U.S. Park Police officer, died of
pulmonary and cardiac illnesses July 19 at his home in Washington.
Mr. Thomas rose through the ranks from dispatcher in 1950 to
motorcycle officer to captain at the time of his 1979 retirement. He
was also editor of the police agency's newsletter.
A native Washingtonian, he graduated from Armstrong High School
and served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War
II. He attended Howard University while working as a cabdriver until
he joined the Park Police.
After retirement, Mr. Thomas worked for several years for the
Department of the Interior as supervisor in the Property Management
