Article: Cabins going up around gorge, but not on rim: Whitewater outfit gets go-ahead for 10 units

With a nod from state economic development officials, the Ames- based whitewater rafting company Class VI River Runners is almost ready to start building rental cabins near the New River Gorge.

At its meeting in Charleston on Thursday, the Economic Development Authority, which hands out low-interest loans to projects promoting economic development, granted preliminary approval for a $585,000, 15- year loan to New River Adventures Resorts of Lansing, a real estate holding company affiliated with Class VI.

The money will be used to buy about 136 acres near the gorge, where 10 cabins will be leased to Class VI; Class VI will in turn rent the cabins out to tourists.
