Article: New Poca barber shop offers old-fashioned atmosphere

Gene Nelson has time to talk, he says.

He leans back in his barber chair while Poca's afternoon traffic whizzes back and forth along Main Street.

Talk has been part of the stock and trade at the old-fashioned barber shop.

That's what Nelson wants to re-create - the kind of barber shop where the magazines were dog-eared and the discussions opinionated.

As for Nelson's opinion, he believes that "real barbering is becoming a lost art."

"I want this shop to be the kind of place where you can come in and have a cup of coffee," he said.

Nelson has the coffee, all right, and cookies, too, sitting on a small table about four feet from the checkerboard.
