Article: Pennington vows to keep Jets' QB job

NEW YORK - Chad Pennington issued a defiant message Tuesday to Billy Volek or Patrick Ramsey or whichever quarterback is acquired in the offseason to compete for his starting job: Prepare for a battle.

"In Southern terms," he said, "pack a lunch and get ready because it's going to be a long day."

After three months of rehabbing his twice-surgically repaired throwing shoulder in relative anonymity, Pennington broke his silence as the Jets cleaned out their lockers at Hofstra on Day 1 of what promises to be a turbulent offseason.

Pennington said he hopes to be throwing by late February at the earliest and he vowed to be the Jets' opening-day starter in 2006.
