Article: Research panel predicts state road fund shortage

Although West Virginia's 555 miles of interstate highway are in relatively good shape, the state will need an extra $1.4 billion to pay for freeway maintenance and upgrades expected during the next 20 years.

That was among the conclusions in a report on the future needs of West Virginia's interstate highway system released Wednesday by TRIP, a national nonprofit transportation research group.

According to the report, West Virginia highway officials expect a total of $2.1 billion in interstate highway repairs and $600 million in lane additions to be needed by 2026. But during that period, the state Department of Transportation will have only $1.3 billion available ...
