Thirty years ago, John Fleek dug a hole 24 inches deep and discovered a new passion in life.

The Cross Lanes man and his wife, Diana, had just moved into their Ridgecross Drive home and decided their yard needed to be landscaped.

"My parents grew roses, and they decided we needed roses," John said.

With that, Diana went out and purchased several Jackson-Perkins rose bushes.

Fleek's boss at the time grew roses and told him that the bushes would need to be planted 24 inches deep.

Initially wincing at the labor it would require, John nonetheless put his weight to a shovel and dug the holes for the rose bushes.
