NEW YORK - Tim Welsh pretty much rolled the dice both times his Providence team faced West Virginia in the past two weeks. The first time it came up double sixes.

Wednesday night it was snake eyes.

Two weeks after struggling mightily with Providence's 2-3 zone, the Mountaineers exploited it to perfection Wednesday night in the first round of the Big East tournament. When they weren't making one of a tournament-record 17 3-pointers, they were exploiting the zone's overplays for layups.

The result was an impressive 92-79 win that puts West Virginia (22- 8) into tonight's 7 p.m. quarterfinal against second-seeded and No. 12 Louisville (22-8) at Madison Square Garden.
