When Ray Wylam of Fairborn, Ohio, first went rafting with Class VI
River Runners in 1979, the amenities were ... uh, basic.
"To replace the mobile home they had been using, they had just
built kind of a woodshed as an office ...," said Wylam. "Then there
were two wall tents they used as dressing rooms and a couple of porta-
potties, and that was it."
Wylam and the small group of Explorer Scouts he was supervising
made their debut run on the New River in two rafts, with Class VI
partner Dave Arnold guiding his raft, and a guide named Fuzzy guiding
the other.
The mix of camping, whitewater action and the natural beauty of
the New River Gorge kept Wylam coming back, ...
