LOUDON, N.H. - When Nextel Cup leader Jeff Gordon was docked 100 points this week for a technical infraction, the chief beneficiary was series runner-up Denny Hamlin.

Instead of trailing Gordon by 271 points, Hamlin enters Sunday's race at New Hampshire International Speedway just 171 points behind the four-time Cup champion.

But Hamlin suggested a more appropriate - and costly - penalty would have been to take away some of Gordon's bonus points.

Under the new Chase for the championship format, the 12 drivers who qualify will be seeded on the basis of wins, with 10 points added to their totals for each victory during the 26-race regular season.
