Article: ELECTION 2006; DEATH PENALTY; Capital punishment supported by voters; But with Doyle opposed, making it law won't be easy

Sen. Alan Lasee (R-De Pere) has been working for years to have Wisconsin adopt the death penalty, a law it hasn't had for more than 150 years. On Tuesday, voters helped him get one step closer to his goal.

Voters in a statewide non-binding referendum Tuesday said they supported the idea of capital punishment in Wisconsin. With about 40% of precincts reporting, almost 54% of voters answered "yes" to the question: "Should the death penalty be enacted in the State of Wisconsin for cases involving a person who is convicted of first- degree intentional homicide, if the conviction is supported by DNA evidence?"

Lasee said he felt vindicated by the results.
