TOP trainers including Henry Cecil have been targeted by a conman who poses as a wealthy backer to persuade them to come into business with him.

His aim is to convince them to spend their money on buying racehorses in his name, but he then refuses to reimburse them.

A man has been arrested by police on suspicion of deception.

However, detectives are puzzled over the motive, saying it appears he wants the kudos of owning a horse rather than any money.

Police are focusing their inquiries on the purchase of a particular racehorse on behalf of Mr Cecil. The horse was bought at auction early last year for Pounds 35,700 and sold in October the same year for Pounds 14,700.
