Trader Joe's, the quirky California grocery chain, opened its first store in the Milwaukee area at the Bayshore Town Center on Friday morning with music, dancing and organic tomato-roasted pepper soup for $2.99 a quart.

It was the clerks who were dancing.

Shoppers got right down to business and snatched up all sorts of private-label foods that the chain is known for: Spicy Cider for $2.69 a half-gallon, free-range chicken broth for $1.99 a quart and Joe's O's, which look a lot like Cheerios, for $1.99 a box.

Employees outnumbered shoppers when Glendale Mayor Jerome Tepper cut the lei to open the store, but customers continued to stream in all morning.
