The paparazzi are ready, cradling their cameras as they crouch
together on a makeshift set of stairs. Tourists wield cellphone
cameras behind a metal barrier, protected from Hollywood Boulevard
traffic and out of touching distance from the celebrities. The cast
of the HBO Western show "Deadwood" clusters behind a little red
velvet rope, its precious clasp -- conferring insider status --
guarded fiercely by a woman with a clipboard.
In the middle of them all stands Johnny Grant, honorary Mayor of
Hollywood, tugging merrily at the levers of the hype-generating
machine.
Grant is about to confer the 2,314th star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame on David Milch -- he's a behind-the-scenes sort ...
