COUNCILLORS in London are claiming more than Pounds 26 million a year in allowances.

An Evening Standard survey has found some of the poorest boroughs in the country paying their members in excess of Pounds 1million a year.

Allowances are now generally considered to be pay for fulltime borough leaders. A number earn more than Pounds 50,000 while the capital's three directly elected mayors each earn in excess of Pounds 70,000.

The cost to taxpayers will increase further tomorrow when a report recommending higher allowances is rubberstamped. Critics
