Article: New Jelapang toll plaza will help save lives

THE public heaved a sigh of relief following Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan's decision to close the accident-prone Jelapang toll plaza where 12 people had died and 74 more injured since 2003.

The new toll plaza is expected to be completed by next July.

Statistics showed that 142 accidents had occurred at the toll plaza. Eighty-seven were due to brake failure.

"I often use the Jelapang toll plaza to get to my hometown, Taiping. The location is not suitable.

"I heard that the cost to demolish and relocate the toll plaza is about RM280 million. I know it is a lot of money but public safety is a priority."
