MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Every four years, critics from across the
country grouse about this tiny state's disproportionate influence on
the presidential election. And it's hard to ignore the fact that New
Hampshire, whose population is 96 percent white, does not look like
a lot of the country when it comes to race and ethnicity. But it
also isn't some pristine, untouched New England of your imagination,
full of hidebound, Protestant Yankees, those mythic descendants of
the early colonists from the British Isles.
