Article: SPEED LIMIT HIKE NEARLY HITS ROADBLOCK IN HOUSE

One by one, insurance industry lobbyists called Indiana state representatives into the hallway on Tuesday to tell them that, in their opinion, raising the speed limit was a bad idea.

One by one, Rep. Dave Wolkins watched the 75 to 80 votes that were promised for his speed limit bill dwindle.

When it came time to vote, it didn't receive the 51 votes necessary for passage. But House Speaker John Gregg, D-Sandborn, left the voting open as supporters of raising the speed limit began harassing "no" voters into changing their votes in favor of the bill.

It barely passed, 51-46.

Last year, the same group voted 93-2 to raise the speed limit, although the increase eventually faltered in the Senate. ...
