When Harold and Shirley Kempf opened their first Donut Bank on First Avenue in 1967, the old Ideal Donut Shop more than a mile away on North Fulton Avenue was the company's prime competitor.

Soon came more competition from a Dunkin Donut shop down the road on First Avenue, but it closed in 1980.

Nowadays the Donut Bank -- with six outlets in Evansville and Newburgh -- faces fast and furious competition from all directions.

Meeting the competition is a daily challenge for the Kempfs and their four sons, Chris, Ben, Joe and Lindsey, who have joined the operation.
