Summer recreation programs -- a once-popular Evansville tradition
co-sponsored by the city and schools that was abandoned about 30
years ago -- are being revived.
And so far, more than 2,000 kids have signed up for a summer
enrichment program.
They'll see magic shows, take field trips, play games and learn
things. There will be a "rain forest" program and a "computer whiz
kids" program. Kids who sign up for Foods Around the World will not
only be introduced to new ethnic foods but also learn some geography
and math concepts through recipes.
"It's all free. And it's really, really exciting," said Dan Diehl,
director of the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp.'s 21st Century
Schools project.
