Evansville has seen many businesses close over the years. But for 107 continuous years -- since 1896 -- de Jong's retail apparel store has been a constant. There's always been a de Jong's.

Not anymore.

Co-owner Howard Abrams announced Monday he and his wife, Carol, are closing their only remaining outlet, de Jong's in Eastland Mall.

Their decision was largely based on slow sales and on furious competition by discount stores, the Internet and catalogs, he said in an interview.

A dramatic change in the spending habits of consumers, who now also invest heavily in electronics, home furnishings, entertainment, travel, recreation and tuition, also played heavily into their decision, he said.
