The bridge across the Wabash River at New Harmony remains an orphan as members of the independent group that manages the bridge continue to transfer control to Indiana or Illinois.

Both states have said they won't consider taking control of the 77- year-old structure until the federal government provides up to $3.4 million for repairs -- difficult in tight budget times.

Without that money, however, the bridge will continue to struggle financially and structurally. But there is some hope, commission chairman Jim Clark said.
