Article: MINIMUM WAGE IS IT NECESSARY? TOO LOW?

The federal minimum wage act turned 65 years old this month, and still there is disagreement over its true value.

Mike Zimmer, a professor of economics at the University of Evansville, is among those who think the minimum wage does as much harm as good. Zimmer thinks the minimum wage should be zero rather than the current $5.15 an hour, which has stuck since 1997.

"Historically, every time there's a forced wage increase, it tends to destroy jobs," he said.

"If an employer is forced to pay a higher wage, he will find a way to reduce his work force," said Zimmer. "Or he will find ways to automate a production process or reduce benefits or job training. Or he will hire illegal aliens."
