According to statistics compiled by The Jockey Club, the stallion
Grand Slam was bred to 197 mares in 2003, making him No. 1 in North
America by volume.
Johannesburg was second at 193. Both stallions are based at
Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky.
The number of stallions covering more than 100 mares this year is
up from 93 to 108. Kentucky is home to 81 of them. The national foal
crop for 2004 is projected to be 37,200.
But back to Grand Slam. By rights, he could have been dead for six
years.
