Back Yard

Back yard, exact age unknown, died Saturday of a broken heart.

It had been on life support since the summer of 1998 when the last batch of little boys came over to play.

Each spring, Back Yard dreamed that a miracle would happen.

That time would go in reverse and the little boys would come back.

But Back Yard grew weary of building its hopes up, only to have them shattered by the continued absence of the squeals of happy children.

The only sound was the chirping of birds, a poor substitute to a bunch of fourth-graders taking batting practice inside the homemade net.

This year, Back Yard seemed to realize the little boys would never return.

That they're only a few chin hairs away ...
